MOREHEAD, Ky. – Following a successful fall schedule that saw three top-three finishes, Morehead State men's golf announces a pair of newcomers for the 2019-20 season.
The newest Eagles Blake Evans (West Liberty, Ky.) and Jonathan Kosier (Mount Sterling, Ky.)—both of whom hail from Morehead State University's service region—comprise the signing class.
"I am very excited to add Blake and Jonathan to our program," said head coach
Matthew Martin. "They have been the best players in this area over the past two years and I look for their games to progress even further this summer and over the course of their careers here at Morehead State."
Both newcomers made a habit of representing the Kentucky High School Athletic Association's 12th Region at the State Golf Tournament, having both competed in the event each of the last four years. Evans qualified for the State Tournament as an individual in each of his four seasons while Kosier qualified along with his Montgomery County High School teammates as Region Champions each of the past four seasons.
Evans joins the Morehead State program from Morgan County High School, having competed for head coach Ralph Hamilton. A three-time Region 12 Player of the Year and two-time Kentucky Junior PGA Player of the Year, he compiled 23 wins during his high school career, posting 17 of those on the Kentucky Junior PGA. As a senior, Evans posted the lowest individual round score of his career en route to a victory at the Paintsville Invitational, finishing three strokes under par with a 67.
Competing as an individual at the State Golf Tournament, Evans secured his highest finish at the event as a junior. He fashioned scores of 74-78-152 (+8) as he finished tied for 30th in a field of 144 golfers. In the latest edition of the event, he marked down scores of 78-79-157 (+13), finishing tied for 39th. His finishes in each of the last two seasons also secured him a spot as KHSAA Second Team All-State.
An accomplished basketball player at Morgan County HS, Evans, along with his father Brian—a former baseball player at Morehead State—create the only father-son duo in Morgan County basketball history to score 1,000 points in their careers as Cougars.
"Blake is an all-around athlete that knows how to win. He excels on the basketball court as well, having already scored 1,000 points heading into his senior season," Martin said.
Competing for head coach Kevin Lawson and the Montgomery County High School Indians program, Kosier helped the Indians to four consecutive Region 12 titles and appearances in the KHSAA State Golf Tournament. Additionally, he helped lead Montgomery County HS to 18 team wins six total in each of the last three seasons. As an individual, Kosier captured three tournament titles, posting the lowest round of his career (66) as he claimed victory at the Flyer Classic as a junior.
At the State Golf Tournament, he propelled the Indians to a sixth-place finish as a senior as the team posted marks of 313-316-629 (+53). Individually as a senior, Kosier fashioned scores of 79-78-157 (+13) to finish tied for 39th. He secured his best finish at the State Tournament as a junior, placing 24th in a field of 144 golfers, firing rounds of 75-76-151 (+7).
"Jonathan also plays basketball and competed on a strong high school golf team throughout his career," added Martin. "His effortless swing has been part of multiple victories over his career and I look for him to contribute to many more over his time at Morehead State."
Evans and Kosier add another pair of Kentuckians to the Morehead State roster, giving Martin seven natives of the Bluegrass State on the roster for next season.
"Both of these young men will be great additions to our university community and fit perfectly within our golf program," concluded Martin. "They will represent us well on and off the golf course and help us continually compete for championships."
Morehead State returns to the golf course to begin the spring portion of its 2018-19 schedule at the Atlantic 10 Match Play Championships on Feb. 18. The two-day event tees off from Weston Hills Country Club in Weston, Fla.
