NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Morehead State sophomore guard
Djimon Henson knocked down a career-best six three-pointers Thursday night at Tennessee State. Unfortunately it came in a setback to the Tigers as the Eagles fell 83-74 at the Gentry Center.
Â
Henson finished 6-of-11 from beyond the arc and had 20 points. The Eagles fell to 6-20 overall and 2-13 in the OVC. TSU won for the seventh straight time.
"I think my young group needs to be commended," said head coach
Preston Spradlin. " We got down by 18, and I told them just don't look at the score. They played hard to the end, and they fought all the way to the final buzzer. There is a lot to be said for that. It might be easy to say 'here we go again,' but they were very coachable, and I thought we made the adjustments we asked them to make."
Â
A 16-3 scoring run by the home team spelled the difference. MSU trailed just 38-33 with 18:27 left but were only able to generate one field goal and a pair of free throws down to the 11:38 mark as the Tigers built an 18-point lead.
Â
The Eagles continued to fight though and trimmed the hosts' lead all the way back to five (67-62) with 4:54 left.
Â
Junior guard
A.J. Hicks dropped in 18 points and had seven assists, one short of his season-best. Sophomore forward
Londell King chipped in 17 points, one short of a career-high, and grabbed eight rebounds. Sophomore guard
Jordan Walker rounded out four in double figures with 13 points.
Â
Morehead State nailed a season-high 15 three-pointers, just three short of the school record.
Â
The first half featured runs by both teams. The Eagles hit two quick three-pointers for a 6-2 lead at the first media timeout. TSU scored the next eight and led until Morehead State regained a 16-15 cushion on a dunk by Walker.
Â
A 9-0 run by the host team shifted the momentum back to the Tigers and a 24-16 lead at the 7:01 mark. MSU cut the deficit back to three on two occasions before settling for a 35-30 Tiger lead at the break.
Â
Delano Spencer drilled seven three-pointers to lead all players with 32 points.
Â
MSU stays in Nashville to face Belmont on Saturday. The game, which will be aired live on CBS Sports Network, will tip off at 8:05 p.m. ET.
