MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Trailing 7-2 following the third inning, the Morehead State baseball team's comeback bid was completed when freshman third baseman
Bryce Hensor ripped a one-out, two-run walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th inning Tuesday as the Eagles defeated Ohio 9-8 at Allen Field.
The Eagles improved to 15-11 with the win. It marked the third straight win for the Eagles over Ohio in the last two seasons.
"We really needed this one," said head coach
Mike McGuire. "We've had a trying week with adversity and injuries and losing two games (at EKU) so this was badly needed. We had a slow start again, but we battled back and never gave up."
The Bobcats got a one-out sacrifice fly with the bases loaded in the top of the 10th to take the 8-7 lead off Eagle right-handed closer
Dom Masullo (2-1), who picked up the win and struck out five of the six outs he recorded in the last two frames.
Designated hitter
Adam Rapp, who tied the game 7-7 in the bottom of the eighth with a solo homer to the deepest part of Allen Field in left center, opened the 10th by drawing a nine-pitch walk off Ohio closer Jake Roehn. Catcher
Hunter Fain, who had subbed in for defense in the ninth inning, then rifled a double down the left field line. After a strike out, Hensor smoked a 2-1 Roehn (1-1) pitch off the short right-field net to score pinch runner
Brody Shoupe and Fain from second with the game-winner.Â
Ohio scored seven runs in the first three innings thansk to four home runs. Leadoff hitter Aaron Levy hit a pair of round-trippers, but five Eagle pitchers combined to hold the visitors off the scoring column until the 10th. Junior
David Looney went the longest, a 3.2-innings stint, while
John Hurayt,
JC Hatcher and
Cory Conway also held the Bobcat bats in check until Masullo took over.
Junior first baseman
Trevor Snyder tied the game 2-2 in the bottom of the first with a two-run homer to right field. Junior shortstop
Reid Leonard later scored on a throwing error by the Ohio catcher on a toss back to the pitcher.
The Eagles crept back to within 7-6 in the seventh when senior second baseman
Braxton Morris recorded an RBI single, Snyder tallied an RBI on a ground out beating out a throw to first and senior outfielder
Tyler Niemann scored on a wild pitch. Morris moved his hitting streak to 21 games and his reached-base streak to 27 games with two hits tonight.
Hensor and Rapp also collected two hits.
