MOREHEAD, Ky. --
The Morehead State softball team got a majority of the offense it needed in the first and second innings of both games against Canisius Friday in the Eagles' home opener and rode efficient pitching the rest of the way in sweeping the Golden Griffins 5-3 and 5-2 at University Field.

The Eagles (15-4) scored all five of their runs in the nightcap in the first two frames and plated three of the five runs in the opener in the first two innings as the Eagles ran their winning streak to seven games. The wins gave Morehead State its best 19-game start since the 2008 team was at 16-3. Canisius fell to 3-13.

Senior pitcher Chelsea McManaway recorded seven strikeouts en route to improving her mark to 10-1, surrendering six hits and a two-run homer in the third.

The Eagles staked themselves to a 3-0 lead after two as freshman right-fielder Paige Scruggs recorded an RBI on a ground out and later scored on a catcher's throwing error. Second baseman Hannah Murphy ripped an RBI single up the middle in the second to score freshman shortstop Kalle Coleman.

The Eagles broke a 3-3 tie in the fifth when Scruggs, who leads the team with a .396 batting average, notched an RBI single. Senior catcher Robyn Leighton followed suit with a high-flying single that bounced off the left field wall with runners on first and second to score Scruggs.

Six different MSU hitters tallied hits.

MOREHEAD STATE 5, CANISIUS 2

Senior pitcher Allison Rager (4-3) surrendered just two hits and one earned run in the complete-game victory and also helped herself out with a two-run double in the first inning.

Rager also scored in the first inning when Leighton hit a fielder's choice back to the pitcher.

Morehead State pushed its cushion to 5-0 in the second when senior left-fielder Taylor Wheeler connected on an RBI single to push Murphy across. Scruggs plated her teammate Wheeler later in the frame on a sacrifice fly.

The score held until the Griffins scored on a sac fly and a passed ball in the sixth inning. Canisius threatened again in the seventh, but Rager got the final batter out looking at a third strike, one of three punchouts on the day.

Wheeler and Rager combined for four of Morehead State's seven hits.
