COLLEGE BASEBALL FOUNDATION RELEASE
MOREHEAD, Ky. – On Thursday, the College Baseball Foundation announced its initial watch list for the Brooks Wallace Award. Morehead State baseball's junior shortstop
Reid Leonard was one of 53 NCAA Division I shortstops to be included on the list. He is one of four Ohio Valley Conference shortstops on the list, joining Tennessee Tech's David Garza, Eastern Kentucky's Ryland Kerr, and Austin Peay's Garrett Kueber.
Leonard, a native of Glen Allen, Va., ranks second on the Morehead State club with a .333 batting average, ranking second with 48 hits on the year. He has knocked out nine extra-base hits on the season, including a team lead tying two triples.
In addition to what he's accomplished swinging the bat, Leonard leads the team drawing 33 walks this season, a total that ranks him 12th in the NCAA. He's also been hit by five pitches, giving him a team-leading 38 free bases (.467 on-base percentage) this year.
With the glove, Leonard has been a part of 24 of the Eagles' OVC leading 41 double plays. Additionally, he adds a .981 fielding percentage, making only three errors in 159 chances this season, picking up 102 assists to pair with 54 putouts.
The Brooks Wallace Award is named in honor of former Texas Tech shortstop Brooks Wallace who lost his battle with leukemia at age 27. The award is sponsored by Mizuno and honors the nation's top shortstop.
Leonard and the Eagles return to action this weekend as they host OVC rival Austin Peay for a three-game set at Allen Field. Game one is set for a 5 p.m. ET first pitch this afternoon.
