Football Wraps Up Workouts With Spirited Spring Game Saturday
MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Before a large crowd on a pleasant evening weather-wise at Jayne Stadium Saturday, Morehead State football put the finishing touches on spring ball with its spring game. The Eagles took part in an hour and a half of real-time plays and situational football.

Fans were treated to a live tailgating atmosphere prior to the game and then saw the Eagle defense come up with six turnovers during live action.

"I liked the effort, tempo and physicality of our team today," said head coach Rob Tenyer. "There was a lot of good and some bad, but I felt like our older guys really played consistent. Our young guys made some plays as well."

The first half featured normal game action and clock rules, while the second half was situational plays with the first and second-teams.

Freshman defensive back CJ Austin and freshman linebacker Jack Meyer came up with interceptions as Meyer took his more than 50 yards to the end zone for a score. Austin had two tackles and a pass break up in the opening half of action.

Offensively, sophomore running back Steven O'Neal led the way on the ground (first-half stats only) with 36 yards, while freshman Logan Holbrook churned out 32 yards and a touchdown. Freshman quarterback Mark Pappas connected with freshman slot man Kyle Gilbert for a 20-yard touchdown.

Freshman defensive back Eldee Edwards III was credited with four tackles.

"We did have some turnovers, which was good for the defense, but offensively we can't allow that to happen. That was kind of our issue last year," Tenyer said. "We went over a lot of different game-type scenarios today. Two-minute, four-minute-type situations, and the offense converted quite a few plays, so there were a lot of positives out here today.

"The biggest growth between the beginning of spring and now is just depth," he said. "We have a lot of guys who are playing now at a high enough level for us to be competitive, but now we have to move into what we call our third quarter and that's our summer program. We'll have about 60 guys here in the summer working out and getting better for fall camp."
