MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Morehead State baseball scored 10 unanswered runs in the seventh and eighth innings Thursday as the Eagles opened their series with UT Martin with a 15-5 victory at Allen Field.
Juniors
Trevor Snyder (4-for-4),
Connor Pauly (3-for-3) and
Adam Rapp (3-for-3)Â combined to go a perfect 10-for-10 at the plate with six RBI and six runs scored, and fellow junior
Niko Hulsizer returned from a month-long injury stint by nailing a home run on the first pitch he saw in the first inning. Hulsizer finished 3-for-5 with a team-best three runs scored.
Rapp came off the bench in a pinch-hit role and eventually gave his team the lead for good in the seventh with a two-run triple that landed just inside the line in right field.
The Eagles improved to 18-13 overall and 6-4 in the OVC, while the Skyhawks slid to 5-21 and 2-11 in the league.
After the visitors got a leadoff home run from Jordan Stoner, Hulsizer tied the contest with his solo shot. Junior
Reid Leonard made it 3-1 later in the first on an RBI triple while also scoring on the play on a throwing error.
Blake Davis eventually pushed UTM into a 5-3 lead in the fifth with a two-run double off the right-field wall.
But, Eagle relievers
John Sherman,
Cory Conway and
John Hurayt combined to shut down UTM for the final four frames. Conway tossed the seventh and eighth, beginning by coaxing a double-play ground ball, to be credited the win and improve to 4-1. Starter
TJ Satterly also had a solid outing, allowing just thee earned runs in the first five frames but striking out a career-high nine.
MSU put the game away with a seven-run eighth inning. Pauly nailed a two-run double, and junior
Jake Hammon crushed a three-run round-tripper. Hammon was 2-for-3.
While he did not get a hit for the second straight game, senior
Braxton Morris did walk once to extend his reached-base streak to 32 games. Leonard's reached-base streak moved to 23 games.
Billy Edwards led four UTM players with multi-hit days with three hits. Peyton Cain (0-3), the second of five Skyhawk pitchers, absorbed the loss.
The teams will finish the series with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.. ET on Friday.
