2018 Eagle Football Outlook: The Receivers
2018 Eagle Football Outlook: The Receivers
Second in a series highlighting each position for the 2018 Morehead State Football program. - Quarterbacks

MOREHEAD, Ky. -- They are the playmakers. And they are the guys who probably add up the most "mileage" running on the football field with all their routes each play.

They also have to be skilled at blocking.

They are the receivers, and Morehead State once again has a determined group ready to make plays in 2018.

"The wide receiving core is probably the deepest, most talented group we have had since I have been here with a good mix of veterans who have produced on this level as well as young guys who are making plays consistently," said associate head coach Milo Austin.

The group starts with Preseason All-PFL wideout Jarin Higginbotham. The senior from Liberty Township, Ohio put up one of the most productive seasons in MSU history in 2017. He hauled in 48 passes, but the deep threat averaged a PFL-best 20.3 yards per catch and scored 10 times in the aerial game.

"I definitely feel like "Higgs" can have either as good, or more productive year because of the depth and ability we have as an offense," Austin added. "Our number one goal is to be ball secure, which will allow for more possessions and opportunities."

Behind him are three equally as dangerous targets. Redshirt sophomore Landon Hurst, sophomore Sugar Ray Wyche, Jr., and junior college transfer Jordan Huffman are all expected to make significant contributions.

Hurst (Frankfort) and Wyche, Jr (Louisville) are in-state products who put up nice stat totals a season ago. Hurst ranked second on the team with 41 catches for 489 yards and four touchdowns. Wyche, Jr caught 23 balls for 314 yards and found the end zone twice. Hurst also returned punts last year, and Wyche Jr. is expected to assume that role too in 2018. Huffman is a transfer from Fullerton (Calif.) College who possesses strong hands and good size at 6-foot-3.

"The overall strength of our receiving core is their unselfishness," said Austin. "We have a lot of guys who will make plays for us on gameday, but they fight for one another, they hold each other accountable, and they support each other. They are willing blockers and love to compete everyday."

Others who fans might get to know better are senior Nathan Sames (Shelbyville, Ky.), sophomore DeVonte Adams (Fishers, Ind.) and redshirt freshman Malik Richards (Versailles, Ky.). Sames got into the action with 15 catches for 157 yards and a touchdown last year as a wideout and a slot receiver. Adams connected for 11 catches for 159 yards.

Austin pointed out two freshmen who should see playing time right away. Ian Holder (Mt. Airy, N.C.) and Jeremiah Scott (Lawrenceville, Ga.) could see passes tossed their way. Holder was a triple threat as a quarterback, wide receiver and defender in high school.

Morehead State will get the season kick-started with an Aug. 30 game at Eastern Kentucky at 7 p.m. ET. Season tickets for the six home games are on sale now by clicking here.
