Volleyball Sinks Hampton to End Eagle Challenge Unscathed

MOREHEAD, Ky. –
Morehead State wrapped up the 2018 Eagle Challenge Saturday, sweeping Hampton to finish the two-day event with a perfect record. The Eagles move to 3-0 on the young season, while the Pirates drop to 0-3.

The Eagles never trailed in the match, sinking the Pirates 25-14, 25-16, and 25-13.

"It was a good performance this afternoon," said head coach Jaime Gordon. "Our team was very focused and determined to execute what they could. We knew that Hampton was an athletic, physical team and that we'd have some opportunities to score, but some things that we'd also need to defend."

Morehead State kept its opponent at bay throughout the match, siding out Hampton a staggering 71% of the time. The Eagles also were efficient offensively, connecting for a .389 team hitting percentage.

For the second consecutive match, sophomore outside hitter Olivia Lohmeier led the team in terminations, pairing with sophomore outside hitter Lauren Rokey, notching nine kills apiece. On the year, Lohmeier has a team-high 37 kills, hitting .368 from the outside.

Redshirt sophomore setter Chandler Clark dished out another 28 assists to increase her season total to 113 helpers through three matches. Her 113 assists have helped the Eagles to a .287 hitting percentage to open the season. For her efforts, Clark was named the most valuable player for the Eagle Challenge.

Defensively, Morehead State deterred six shots at the net, running the team's total block number to 35 through three matches. Senior middle blocker Maddie Fella turned away five shots on the afternoon, upping her season total to 21 blocks, including five solos. Freshman libero Allison Whitten paced the back row with a team-high 12 digs, totaling a team-leading 43 for the season.

The Eagles hit the road for the first time of the 2018 season Tuesday, taking on rival Marshall in Huntington, W. Va. The match is set for a 6 p.m. ET first serve from Gullickson Gym.
