MOREHEAD, Ky.— After dropping three straight matches in overtime, the Morehead State soccer team will look to buck the trend with a trip to Columbus, Ohio and a Thursday evening matchup with Ohio State.
The Eagles opened their season with a 2-1 win at Akron before battling into extra time at Pittsburgh, at Kentucky, and against Ball State at home. Never in the 20-year history of Morehead State soccer has the team played to extra time in four-consecutive matches.
Redshirt-sophomore goalkeeper
Eva Helgadottir has anchored the team defensively. Despite having a 1-3 record in goal, the Reykjavik, Iceland native has been a colossal chore for offenses to shoot around having racked up 33 saves and recording .868 save percentage in her 377:37 minutes in goal. Helgadottir is currently ranked second nationally for her 33 saves and sixth for her 8.25 saves per game.
Offensively, the Eagles have been selective with their shots, putting 17-of-31 shots taken on goal for a .548 goal percentage. Leading the team upfront has been senior forward
Dani Wilson who has taken a team-high seven shots with six of those being on target. Wilson has found help pressuring defenses upfront from freshman forward
Colleen Swift who has netted one of the Eagles three goals and taken five shots with four on goal. Redshirt-sophomore midfielder
Katie Quinn is the other Eagle to score a goal while the team is also credited with a goal after forcing an own goal on Akron in the season opener.
Ohio State enters the matchup with a 1-2 record and having most recently came away with a 1-0 road win at fifth-ranked Florida. Freshman forward Kayla Fischer has netted the Buckeyes only goal so far of 2018 which came last time out against the Gators. In goal, Senior goalkeeper Devon Kerr has logged all possible minutes through the team's first three games and made 17 saves.
The meeting is third all-time between Morehead State and Ohio State on the soccer pitch, with the Buckeye's holding the 2-0 advantage and most recently defeating the Eagles 3-2 in the season-opening match of 2013 in Columbus.
The match is set to kickoff at 7:00 p.m. ET at Jesse Owens Field. Live stats are available and the game can be streamed on the Big Ten Network Plus.
