HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- The Morehead State soccer team displayed firepower on offense and a lockdown mentality on defense Thursday night as the Eagles defeated Marshall 5-0 at Hoops Family Field in the team's first of two exhibition matches.
"It was a great way to start," said head coach
Warren Lipka. "We know it's just a scrimmage, but we did some nice things."
Freshman forward
Abby VanHoeve registered a pair of goals and had an assist, while sophomore midfielder
Tia Williams assisted on two goals as well. Senior midfielder
Cara Maher found the back of the net and collected an assist.
The Eagles led 3-0 at the half as junior defender
Morgan Treser finished off a corner kick from senior forward
Dani Wilson to open the scoring flurry. Maher made it 2-0 later off a pass from VanHoeve. The pair reversed roles next as VanHoeve scored and Maher had the helper pass to make it 3-0.
In the second, Van Hoeve scored again for a 4-0 advantage, this time assisted by Williams. Freshman forward
Colleen Swift closed the match's tallies as Williams made the assist pass again.
In net, sophomore goalie
Eva Helgadottir started and pitched a shutout in the first half, while senior netminder
Michelle Washburn preserved the shutout with a flawless second period.
The Eagles will have one more tune-up opportunity before the regular season begins next Friday at Akron. MSU travels to face Louisville in an exhibition Saturday at 6 p.m. ET.
