MOREHEAD, Ky. – The Morehead State softball team hosted a Home Run Derby event to raise money for the family of Bryce Combs and the Morehead Search & Rescue team on Wednesday at University Field.
Combs was a nine-year-old boy who was tragically swept away by flood waters in Morehead on Sep. 9. Hundreds of volunteers assisted Morehead Search & Rescue with the search for Combs over the coming week before he was located, unfortunately deceased.
The result of the event saw 125 participants take their best swings and raised more than $700 for Combs' family and the search teams.
Many university staff members, including professors, took part in the event along with several of the Morehead State athletic teams and many community members.
"One thing the athletic department, the university, and the community hold true to our heart is a slogan we call, one town, one team," said softball head coach
Samantha Jones.
Among the teams that came out to support the event was the Morehead State football team and head coach
Rob Tenyer.
"This is in support of something that's really sad at the end of the day," said Tenyer. "I think it's great that the community and university can come together and raise some money for the Combs' family and the search teams."
Allison Davis, a junior on the softball team, was proud of the outpouring of support from the university family and community for her team's event.
"We were so heartbroken when we heard about Bryce so we decided to come up with a way to rally back and help his mom, and then it was so awesome to see all of the athletic teams and community members who came to support us and Combs' family"
The Morehead State softball team is currently going through fall camp and is scheduled to play Kentucky Christian in a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at Noon ET.
