MOREHEAD, Ky. – After sweeping its in-state rival Eastern Kentucky Wednesday night, Morehead State volleyball continues its three-game homestand Saturday, welcoming in Ohio Valley Conference foe Austin Peay. The Eagles (13-4, 4-1 OVC) enter with a 39-29 advantage over the Governors (5-14, 3-2) in the all-time series.
The Eagles enter following a straight-set victory over the Colonels, taking the match by scores of 25-18, 25-22, and 25-15. The victory improved Morehead State to 9-0 at home this season, the best start for the program since going undefeated (14-0) at home in 1989.
Junior outside hitter
Olivia Lohmeier—named OVC co-Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 7—paced Morehead State's offense, hitting .293 while collecting 17 kills. Her kill count upped her career kill total to 967 career kills, placing her 21st on Morehead State's career kills list. Lohmeier continues to find herself ranked in the top-25 in the NCAA in six different offensive categories, including four where she ranks in the top-10.
Against the Colonels on Wednesday night, sophomore middle blocker
Mia Swearingen joined Lohmeier in double-figures, collecting 11 kills of her own. Swearingen hit .381 in the match while also collecting three total blocks. Two back row players also found themselves in double-figures as sophomore libero
Allison Whitten and sophomore defensive specialist
Olivia Montelisciani recorded 15 and 11 digs, respectively.
Freshman setter
Bridget Bessler dished out 38 assists against Eastern Kentucky, upping her season total to 557 assists in 51 sets. She averages 10.92 helpers per set, ranking 22nd in the NCAA, as she is still the only true freshman setter in the country to rank in the top-25 in assists per set. As a team, Morehead State has collected 820 assists on 880 team kills, ranking top-25 in the nation in both categories.
Morehead State also continued to find success in the service game, collecting five more aces against Eastern Kentucky. The Eagles rank second in the OVC in both team service aces and aces per set, tallying 104 and 1.65, respectively. On the year, five of the team's six primary servers have recorded double-digit aces led by Montelisciani who's recorded a team-best 25 service aces.
