CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Hitting the road for the first time in three matches, Morehead State volleyball fell on the wrong side of the decision Friday night against Southeast Missouri. The Redhawks (13-8, 5-2 OVC) defeated the Eagles (14-6, 5-2) by scores of 25-10, 27-25, and 25-21.
Junior outside hitter
Olivia Lohmeier produced a match-high kill count for the second-consecutive match, tallying 19 kills. She recorded her 19 kills on 45 swings, hitting .222 while also producing 12 of her 19 kills in the match's second set.. Falling one kill shy of double-figures, fellow junior outside hitter
Lauren Rokey totaled nine kills on 26 swings, hitting .231. As a team, Morehead State collected 38 kills in the match while hitting .122 as a team.
The Eagles recorded 37 assists on their 38 kills, averaging 12.3 assists per set. Freshman setter
Bridget Bessler recorded a match-best 32 assists. She added 11 digs on the evening, producing her fifth-career double-double and her second in the team's last three matches.
Joining Bessler in double-figures in the dig category was sophomore libero
Allison Whitten. Whitten dug up a match-leading 16 balls leading a Morehead State group that scooped up 53 total digs. Lohmeier added eight digs for the Eagles while sophomore defensive specialist
Olivia Montelisciani chipped in seven to finish behind Whitten and Bessler on the scoresheet.
In service, Morehead State landed two service aces with redshirt junior right-side hitter
Liz Allen and McCarson collecting an ace apiece. At the net, sophomore middle blockers
Hannah Keating and
Mia Swearingen along with Allen and Rokey each collected a block assist.
Southeast Missouri—the Ohio Valley Conference's leader in service aces and team total blocks—stuck to their strengths Friday evening, tallying a match-high nine service aces and seven total blocks. Outside hitter Mikayla Kuhlmann paced the Redhawks with a team-best 11 kills while also tying middle blocker Maggie Adams for the team lead in total blocks with four.
Morehead State returns to the court tomorrow afternoon, travelling to UT Martin. Match time is set for 12 p.m. ET.
