MOREHEAD, Ky. – Looking for a second consecutive sweep of the Ohio Valley Conference's Nashville roster, Morehead State volleyball travels to the Music City for a pair of matches. The Eagles (17-6, 8-2 OVC) face Tennessee State (9-14, 2-8) Friday and Belmont (2-23, 1-9) Saturday.
Morehead State defeated both Belmont and Tennessee State in the team's prior meetings, downing the Bruins in four-sets and Tigers in straight-sets in the OVC's opening weekend. The Eagles' opening weekend sweep of the league's Nashville teams marked the third-straight weekend sweep of Belmont and Tennessee State. Morehead State also enters the weekend looking to sweep all meetings in a season for the second straight season and doing so for the first time since 2012-13.
Entering the weekend, junior outside hitter
Olivia Lohmeier ranks top-10 in the NCAA in total kills and points, ranking fifth and seventh, respectively. She's collected 405 kills and 441.0 points this season becoming the first Eagle since 2015-16 to record 400-plus kills in back-to-back seasons. Overall, Lohmeier ranks top-25 in the country in six different offensive categories.
As a team, Morehead State features one of the most potent offenses in the OVC, ranking tops in the league in assists per set (13.05), team assists (1,109), and team kills (1,182) while ranking second in kills per set (13.91). Orchestrating the offense, freshman setter
Bridget Bessler has passed out 760 assists in 69 sets, averaging 11.01 assists per set. Bessler ranks 22nd in the nation in assists per set, being one of two freshmen in the country to rank in the top-25.
Defensively, the Eagle backline features a pair of players with 200 or more digs on the season. Sophomore libero
Allison Whitten paces the Morehead State back row, scooping up 351 balls while fellow sophomore defensive specialist
Olivia Montelisciani ranking second on the team with 224 digs. Whitten and Montelisciani have dug up 200-plus balls in back-to-back seasons, making them the first set of teammates to accomplish this since 2012-13.
The duo also leads Morehead State in the service game. Montelisciani landed eight service aces last weekend, including a career-high-tying six versus SIUE, upping her season total to 36. Her 36 service aces rank as the 32nd-best total in the nation while totaling the most aces for an Eagle since 2017. Whitten has added 28 service aces of her own this season as she seeks to join Montelisciani with 30 or more aces on the season to create the first set of teammates with 30-plus aces in a season since 2013.
Match times for this weekend are set for 7 p.m. ET and 3 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
