Volleyball Adds Talented Duo as Part of its 2020 Signing Class
MOREHEAD, Ky. – With the regular season hitting its final week, Morehead State volleyball is proud to announce its two-member signing class for the 2020 season.

"I am incredibly excited to share with Eagle fans the newest additions to our volleyball family," said head coach Jaime Gordon. "These two women are outstanding student-athletes of the highest character."

Morehead State welcomes Brenna Bommer (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and Irene Wogenstahl (Crestview Hills, Ky.) to the Eagle family. Both will be freshmen during the 2020 season.

The Eagles' latest class continues a run of familiarity while also tapping into a new frontier for the program. Hailing from the Cincinnati Metropolitan Area and competing for Tri-State Elite, Wogenstahl is the ninth Eagle to come from the Greater Cincinnati Area on the 2020 squad and the sixth to join Morehead State from Tri-State Elite. For Bommer, hailing from Southern California, she is the first since Wendy Balut (Lake Forest, Calif.) in 1992 to join the Morehead State program from the Golden State.

Competing for Mira Costa High School and head coach Cam Green, Bommer has led the Mustangs to 90-plus wins and counting throughout her high school career. As a senior, she's guided MCHS to the California Interscholastic Federation SoCal Division I State Tournament quarterfinals, entering the tournament as the fourth seed in the bracket. Bommer's also guided Mira Costa to a number of top-three finishes at tournaments throughout Southern California, including a championship—during her senior season—at the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions.

At the club level, Bommer has competed for two of the most competitive clubs in the country, seeing time with Mizuno Long Beach Volleyball and the Southern California Volleyball Club. As a member of Mizuno Long Beach during the 2017-18 club season, she helped the team rank 17th in the nation in the 16U category according to PrepVolleyball.com. Bommer was also chosen during the summer of 2017 to represent Team West Side at the European Global Challenge in Pula, Croatia.

Off the court, Bommer is a two-time Scholar-Athlete Award winner at MCHS. At Morehead State, she plans on pursuing a degree in Space Systems Engineering—which is one of a distinctly few programs in the field across the country. Bommer is also an alumna of SpaceTrek, a space science camp for young women held at Morehead State.

"Brenna is going to continue our tradition of great setters. Not only is her tempo and location outstanding, like the setters before her, but she is also a great leader who is focused on making those around her better," Gordon said. She has competed at a high level in club and high school and brings a bright positive attitude to the floor. She is easy to communicate with and has a great feel for the game."

Wogenstahl joins the Morehead State volleyball program after competing for head coach Matt Long at Dixie Heights High School. As a Colonel, she helped DHHS to four Kentucky High School Athletic Association Region 9 Tournaments, following four runners-up finishes in the highly competitive District 34. During her career, Wogenstahl helped Dixie Heights to 77 wins while garnering two KHSAA Region 9 and District 34 All-Tournament Team placements and 2018 KVCA Honorable Mention All-State and 2019 KVCA Second Team All-State nods.

An accomplished middle blocker, Wogenstahl recorded 1,231 kills and 324 total blocks during her high school career. As a senior, she collected 415 terminations and 97 deterrents, ranking 11th in the Commonwealth in kills per set, averaging 4.60 kills per set. Wogenstahl also helped Dixie Heights rank 20th and 21st in the KHSAA in blocks per set (2.9) and kills per set (10.6), respectively, in 2019.

A two-time KHSAA Academic All-State honoree and a member of the Dean's List at DHHS, Wogenstahl intends on pursuing a degree in the medical field.

"Irene is a great athlete with a very high ceiling. She has been an impact player for her high school and club teams showing her versatility to attack from multiple places on the net. She has built strong ties with her teammates and will fit in nicely with our team. I can't wait to get started working with her in our gym on a daily basis," said Gordon.
