MOREHEAD, Ky. – After putting together one of the most successful fall campaigns in program history, Morehead State men's golf announces the addition of Andrew Marrs for the 2020-21 season.
Marrs, hailing from Lexington, Ky., adds another talented Kentuckian to head coach
Matthew Martin's 2020-21 roster, becoming the eighth Bluegrass State native to join the program for the 2020-21 season.
"Andrew is a perfect fit for our program and I cannot wait to coach him next year," said Martin. "He has enjoyed success on the course individually and with his team. He comes here with valuable experience and a tremendous foundation to develop his game even more. He will be a great role-model in the classroom and on the course."
Marrs joins Morehead State following a successful career at Lexington Christian Academy—one of the top programs in the Kentucky High School Athletic Association over the few years—that culminated with three trips to the KHSAA State Golf Championships, including a state title in 2017. In 2019, helping the Eagles to a third-place finish, he claimed an individual eighth-place finish, concluding the KHSAA State Golf Championships at five-over-par.
Earning four varsity golf letters at LCA, Marrs helped the Eagles to three-straight All-A State Championships from 2017 to 2019. As a junior, he was named LCA's Most Improved Player before parlaying that honor into the program's Brad Shelton Award for Leadership as a senior.
As a junior golfer, Marrs has had a successful run on the Bluegrass Junior Tour, Hurricane Junior Golf Tour, and Kentucky PGA Junior Tour, claiming 10 event wins over the past four years. In 2019, he won the HJGT College Prep Series held at the University of Kentucky, qualifying him for the HJGT Tournament of Champions to be held at ChampionsGate Golf Club in Orlando, Fla.
Marrs also claimed a fourth-place finish at the 2019 Kentucky Boys Junior Amateur held at Bardstown Country Club. He finished the event at three-under-par, fashioning rounds of 70-71-141.
Off the course, Marrs is a KHSAA Academic All-State honoree and the son of a pair of collegiate golfers. His mother Missy competed at Centre College and Central Florida while his father Benji competed at Transylvania.
"He may very well be the best golfer in his family, which is an impressive title to hold. Andrew will join another strong team next year, but he will absolutely come in ready to compete for a spot in the lineup," added Martin.
