Big Nights From Calvert & Jeune Not Enough as Women's Hoops Falls to Govs

MOREHEAD, Ky. –  Despite graduate forward McKenzie Calvert tying a career-best with 27 points and junior guard Aliyah Jeune registering a double-double of 24 points and 10 rebounds, the Morehead State women's basketball team suffered an 84-75 setback to Ohio Valley Conference foe Austin Peay on Thursday evening at Johnson Arena.
 
The Governors (12-12, 7-6 OVC) led the game for 38:51 and converted on a season-best 28 free throws on 34 attempts. The Eagles (18-8, 9-3 OVC) made five more shots from the field – 26-of-66 (.424) to Peay's 23-of-61 (.377) – but were limited to 14 makes in 18 shots from the charity stripe.
 
Morehead State claimed its only lead of the game at 41-40 on a Calvert jumper with 3:12 to go in the second quarter. The Govs snatched the lead back in 17 seconds and closed the first half on an 11-2 run, giving them a 51-43 advantage at the break.
 
Austin Peay's lead never dropped below four points in the second half as the pulled out the win.
 
Calvert's 27-point outing was a product of 9-of-19 shooting from the field with 9-of-9 makes from the free throw line. Jeune, who had been held to single digits in her last three games, sank all five of the Eagles' triples as she poured in 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for her third triple double of the season.
 
Senior guard Miranda Crockett rounded out Morehead State's double-figure scorers with 15 points. The scoring figure extended Crockett's double-digit scoring streak to 30 games.
 
The Governors totaled four players in double figures, led by Keisha Gregory with 21 points. Forward Arielle Gonzalez-Varner tallied a double-double for the visitors with 12 points and a game-best 13 rebounds.
 
The Eagles return to the court on Saturday at home against Eastern Kentucky. The game is scheduled to tipoff at 2:05 p.m. ET.
