WILMINGTON, N.C. – Morehead State beach volleyball concluded play at the UNCW Dig & Dive Invitational on Saturday, splitting four matches across the two-day event. With the results, the Eagles move to 6-3 on the year, concluding their five-game Spring Break road trip 2-3.
"This week was a good opportunity for us to play some very good and established programs," said head coach
Jaime Gordon. "The team has been working hard and we are seeing their commitment paying off."
Over the course of the weekend, the Eagles took matches from Tusculum and Carson-Newman while dropping to host UNC Wilmington and the College Charleston. Morehead State took four of five flights from Tusculum and swept Carson-Newman in the team's two victories.
The team's top two pairings altered in the first match of the weekend due to illness, as freshmen Hannah Keating and Margaret Musselman comprised the top line and sophomore Olivia Lohmeier and junior Karlee Reynolds made up the twos. Freshman Allison Whitten would return to the top pairing starting with the second match of the weekend against UNC Wilmington.
Ultimately, Keating and Musselman would drop their flight against Tusculum while Lohmeier and Reynolds would capture their match. The pairing of Keating and Whitten and Lohmeier and Musselman would conclude the weekend at 1-2.
"We have to get better at maintaining pressure on strong teams and minimize runs of points. I thought that our passing and shot selection was strong at all pairs today. We have a quick turn-around before hosting two strong opponents this week," added Gordon.
Following a season-opening eight-game road slate, Morehead State returns home for each of the team's next six matchups. The Eagles host in-state rival Eastern Kentucky on Tuesday (3:30 and 5:30 p.m. ET) before opening up Atlantic Sun play on Saturday, welcoming in Austin Peay.
