Coleman Homers as Softball Drops Two Against SIUE

MOREHEAD, Ky.Kalle Coleman peppered her fifth homerun of the 2019 season but Morehead State softball dropped both games of a twin bill to SIUE on Wednesday afternoon at University Field.

The Eagles (2-33, 0-14 OVC) were held to just two hits in an 8-2 loss in game one before falling 12-4 in six innings during game two against the Cougars (15-20, 7-7 OVC).

SIUE 8, MOREHEAD STATE 2

Freshman Princess Valencia and senior Aubrey Bennett were the lone Eagles to get hits as the team's offense sputtered in a game-one loss to SIUE.

After falling behind 3-0 through the Cougars' first three trips to the plate, Morehead State punched back with two runs in the bottom of the frame. After a leadoff walk by Freshman Sarah Hallock, freshman Princess Valencia singled up the middle and freshman Peyton Slater was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Junior Helyna Bissell earned an RBI with a bases loaded walk for the first run and senior Cheyenne Meyer earned the second RBI after getting-by-a-pitch with the bases still juiced.

Both runs counted against SIUE starting pitcher Emily Ingles. Ingles was removed for reliever Corinna Rivas after she hit Slater.

Rivas was awarded the victory and improved to 7-9 overall.

The Cougars went on to plate three-more runs in the fifth and two-more runs in the sixth inning to put Morehead State away.

Eagles' starting pitcher Alexis Strother was charged with the loss and dropped to 0-4 overall.

SIUE 12, MOREHEAD STATE 4 (6inn)

Coleman, a sophomore from Wheelersburg, Ohio, went 2-for-3 in game two and drove in two runs with a blast that cleared the right-center field fence in the third inning.

The third inning saw the Eagles cut into a four-run Cougars' lead. Preceding Coleman's two-run shot, was a double by freshman Peyton Rose who later scored on a single to left field by Valencia.

Unfortunately for Morehead State, SIUE quickly answered the three-run third frame and added four runs of their own in the fourth thanks to three home runs off the bats' of Abby Marlow, Alana Cobb-Adamn, and Zoe Schafer.

Rivas again picked up the win for the Cougars after tossing three and two-third innings in relief of starter Bianca Vozenilek. Rivas improved to 8-9 overall.
Eagles' starter Randi Hamilton suffered the loss and fell to 2-7 in the circle.
