Baseball Responds With Nightcap Victory to Even Tech Series 1-1

BOX SCORE (PDF)

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. --
After dropping the opening game Friday, Morehead State baseball responded with a 10-8 victory over Tennessee Tech in the nightcap at Quillen Field.

The Eagles now sit at 33-18 overall and 16-10 in the Ohio Valley Conference, while TTU is 21-28 overall and 8-18 in the league.

Finding themselves down 4-1 heading into the top of the fifth, a rally started with a single by senior first baseman Trevor Snyder. Junior DH Jon Burghardt drew a walk, and then senior shortstop Reid Leonard singled home Snyder. A batter later, senior left-fielder Jake Hammon sent Mark Leonard's first pitch deep over the right-field wall to make it a 5-4 Eagle lead.

However, Tech responded with a pair of home runs - the third and fourth allowed in the game - off MSU starter Jason Goe.

An RBI single from sophomore third baseman Stephen Hill scored Burghardt with the tying run to make it 6-6 in the seventh, and then senior center-fielder Connor Pauly blasted a two-run triple into the left-field gap.

The Eagles tacked on two more runs in the top of the ninth as Hammon doubled to right center to score junior second baseman Dom Peroni on a high fly ball that was lost in the lights and dropped. Peroni had doubled earlier on a similar high-high ball.

Tech made it interesting in the ninth, scoring twice and nearly tying the game on a double that was called a foul ball, but freshman reliever Landon Weins came on and struck out two and got a fly out to end it for his first career save. Senior reliever David Looney picked up the win with 3.1 innings of scoreless ball to improve to 3-0.

Leonard, Hammon, Hill and Pauly all had two hits apiece.

With rain in the forecast, the teams still have Saturday or Sunday to complete the series. Check MSUEagles.com for the updated game information.
