MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Morehead State redshirt sophomore right-handed pitcher
Alex Garbrick was chosen by the New York Yankees in the 2019 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft Wednesday. He was selected in the 40th round.
Garbrick joins fellow pitching teammate
Dalton Stambaugh (30th round by Orioles) as MSU picks in this year's draft. He is the ninth player to be drafted in head coach
Mike McGuire's tenure, all since 2015, and it's the third year since then the Eagle program has landed multiple selections in the same draft class.
Garbrick is the third-ever MSU player chosen in an MLB Draft by the Yankees, joining current assistant coach
Kane Sweeney (2015) and Matt Michael (60th round in 1988).
"It's great for Alex to get drafted. After missing last year to injury, he put a lot of hard work in to get back on the field," said McGuire.
"I'm really happy for him and I believe he is just beginning to scratch the surface of what he is capable of on the mound."
Garbrick, who sat out the 2018 season as a medical redshirt, returned this year to help the Eagles win a school-record 40 games. He finished with 69 strikeouts in just 58 innings and made OVC weekend starts in two of the final three series. His high-water mark came with a 10-strikeout effort in an eventual walk-off win against Murray State on May 5. he was also the winning pitcher in MSU's OVC Tournament victory to eliminate Eastern Kentucky on May 24.
The 90+ mile-per-hour fastballer from Mill Hall, Pa., finished with a 3-4 record and a 4.32 earned run average this season.
