JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – Freshman midfielder
Eva Kiper scored her first-career goal in the 66
th minute to help Morehead State Soccer earn a 1-0 victory against Ohio Valley Conference foe Jacksonville State on Sunday afternoon at JSU Soccer Complex.
The victory is the Eagles first against the Gamecocks on the road since a 2-1 double-overtime win on Sept. 29, 2013.
"We played a complete match today," said MSU head coach
Warren Lipka. "I thought we executed well for the entire 90 minutes which is something you have to do in order to get results on the road. I'm proud of my team and look forward to getting back to work and preparing for another tough conference match this coming week."
Freshmen goalkeepers
Grace Gaffney and
Kayla Landman recorded the combined clean sheet for the Eagles. Gaffney started the match and logged 55:12 before Landman entered and denied four shot attempts over the final 34:48 of the match.
Offensively, Morehead State outshot the Gamecocks 12-9 and struck six of those attempts on goal. Sophomore defender
Nicole Palmer logged a team-best in both shots (3) and shots on goal (2).
Jacksonville State's Cynthia Bagozzi took a game-high six shots. In goal for the Gamecocks, keeper Morgan Lerch made five saves while allowing Kiper's goal.
JSU falls to 3-7 overall and 0-2 against OVC competition with the loss.
The win for Morehead State, which is its first road win in OVC play since Oct. 17, 2017, at Eastern Illinois, improved its record to 1-0-1 in league play. Overall, the Eagles raise their overall mark to 2-6-1.
