Throwback Thursday: A Look Back at Donna Murphy's Legendary Career
MOREHEAD, Ky. --- Today's Throwback Thursday is dedicated to women's basketball all-time great, Donna Murphy. Murphy, originally from Newport, Ky., played for the Eagles from 1976-80 during which she set 13 individual records. She finished her career with 2,059 points and grabbed 1,442 rebounds. While her rebound record still stands, both were MSU bests at the time.

At Morehead State, she was the OVC Player of the Year and first-ever OVC Female Athlete of the Year for 1979-80. She was also a three-time OVC First-Team member and led the Eagles to an OVC Tournament Championship during the 1978-79 season. She is the only player in MSU women's basketball history to lead the team in points, rebounds, and assists in the same season, a feat she accomplished during the 1979-80 campaign.

She received numerous accolades during her career, being the recipient of the Presidential Cup for Outstanding Senior Award (1980), Scholar Athlete of the Year (1980), National Dean's List of Academic Achievements (1980), President's List for Academic Excellence (1980), and OVC All-Academic Team (1979-80). She was twice selected as a regional All-American by Kodak.

Until 2011, she was the only women's basketball player to have her jersey retired and hung in the rafters of Johnson Arena. In 1990, she was the first women's basketball player to be inducted into the Morehead State Hall of Fame. She is one of only five players, in MSU men's or women's basketball, to reach the illustrious 2,000 career points club.

Before arriving at Morehead State, she was named Kentucky's First Official Miss Basketball in 1976, after averaging 35 points and 20 rebounds. In 1975, she received the Ted Sanford MVP award, which is given to the Kentucky Girls State Tournament MVP. That same year, she was just one of two high school players invited to the Olympic Trials.

Following her collegiate career, Murphy played professional basketball for the WPBL St. Louis Streak. After her playing days, she was an assistant women's basketball coach at the University of Kentucky, University of Florida, University of Memphis, University of Cincinnati, Morehead State University and Asbury University. At Asbury, she started the women's basketball program and was there for 11 years. She has also coached at the high school, middle school, and AAU Exposure Elite and Pro Am levels.

She is currently the Academic Suspension and Probation Specialist and Director of Intramural Sports at the BCTC Cooper Campus.
