BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Following a season in which Morehead State men's golf continued to cement itself in the record books, the program wasn't done as it continued to stamp the record book as the Ohio Valley Conference announced its postseason honors Wednesday afternoon.
Garnering two all-conference players and one all-newcomer team member, Morehead State accomplished feats that hadn't been accomplished since 1979, 1982, 2002, and 2010 as senior
Cooper Collins, junior
Joe Muschong earned All-OVC honors, and freshman
Brody Webb secured an All-Newcomer Team spot.
"I am excited for Cooper, Joe, and Brody," said head coach
Matthew Martin. "Our coaches recognized their consistent performance in the events we were able to play."
For Collins, his selection to the All-Conference Team marks the third consecutive season with an All-OVC nod for the Lexington, Ky. native. The selection makes him one of two golfers in the program's history to achieve three career All-Conference selections, joining Morehead State Athletic Hall of Famer Charlie Bowles (1979, 1981, 1982) as the only Eagle golfers to accomplish the feat while Collins is the only golfer in program history to do so in three consecutive seasons.
"For Cooper to be honored three years in a row is extremely impressive. He is building quite the resume and I very much look forward to seeing what he adds nest season," added Martin.
Joining on the All-Conference Team, Collins and fellow Lexington, Ky. native Muschong become the first set of teammates since Morehead State Athletic Hall of Famers Nick Atzinger and Josh Teater in 2002 to both earn an All-Conference selection in the same season.
Martin continued, "Joe started the year very strong and worked incredibly hard to improve every single day. He absolutely deserves being recognized as one of the best in our league."
The 2019-20 season also is just the fifth time in program history the Eagles have claimed multiple All-Conference selections, joining the 1978-79, 1981-82, 1996-97, and 2001-02 seasons.
With his selection to the All-Newcomer Team, Webb (Georgetown, Ky.) joins former Eagle Jared Flanery (2010) as the only players in program history selected to the OVC's All-Newcomer Team in the team's 15-year history (2006-present).
"Brody played well in his first semester of college golf and made the biggest impact of any freshman in the league," concluded Martin.
On the year, Collins, Muschong, and Webb helped Morehead State to six consecutive top-four placements to open the season—the most consecutive top-four finishes since doing so across the 1998-99 and 1999-00 seasons. The group also led the Eagles to their first tournament victory since 2015, leading the team to a victory at the NKU Fall Classic while also helping the team set and tie the program record for the lowest 54-hole team total (834).
Through six stroke-play events, this season, Collins (71.2) and Muschong (71.8) ranked fifth and sixth, respectively, in the OVC in stroke average while Webb (72.9) led all conference freshmen in scoring average, ranking 18th in the league. Of the team's 15 best individual round scores this season, the grouping of Collins, Muschong, and Webb own 10 of the 15 lowest single-round totals as all 15 rounds sat sub-70.
Collins posted a pair of top-five finishes this season with his best coming as claimed his first career outright victory, taking the Musketeers Classic at Maketewah Country Club in Cincinnati, Ohio by one stroke. For the event, he posted scores of 67-71-71-209 (-4) to complete his third tournament of the season below par.
Muschong, like Collins, also claimed a pair of top-five finishes during the 2019-20 season, posting his best finish at the season-opening EKU Raising Cane's Invitational. He fashioned scores of 69-68-74-211 (+1) to help Morehead State to a third-place team finish. On the season, Muschong crafted the team's lowest 54-hole total, writing in marks of 64-70-72-206 (-7) at the Elon Phoenix Invitational.
Webb's best finishes of the season came at both the NKU Fall Classic and the J.T. Poston Invitational, tying for 22nd at both events. At the J.T. Poston Invitational, he posted the best 54 and 18-hole totals of his career, firing rounds of 70, 70, and 69 (209) at the event. Across 15 rounds this season, six were shot at 70 or below.
