MOREHEAD, Ky. – It was 16 years ago today that the lone season with Greg Sheen at the helm of Morehead State Soccer began.
The Eagles began the 2004 campaign with a contest against Wright State, a team they had failed to defeat prior to this August 27
th matchup. The match was held at the Raiders' home stadium in Dayton, Ohio, a familiar city for Sheen who was previously an assistant for the women's soccer team at Dayton before taking the head job at MSU.
Anticipation was high for this new era of an Eagles' soccer program which had come up short of finishing with a winning record in its first six years in Division I. The team had recently added a then MSU-record 11 freshmen to the squad, including a set of twins from Sissonville, W. Va. who went on to have their names all over the Morehead State soccer record book.
Coincidentally, these sisters accounted for the first two goals of the year as Rachel Kendall scored on a quick shot through the net that was quickly followed by a goal from her sister, Rebekah, to put the young Eagles up 2-0 at the end of the first half. Morehead State furthered its lead when another freshman, Jackie Borda, put one by the Raiders' goalkeeper to make it a 3-0 contest. Wright State eventually scored on a penalty kick but couldn't find another source of offense and fell to MSU by a final score of 3-1.
Morehead State finished the 2004 season with a 9-9-1 (4-4 OVC) record and placed fourth in the Ohio Valley Conference after being projected to finish last in the preseason poll. For his efforts, Sheen became the first Morehead State soccer head coach to be awarded OVC Coach of the Year. Rachel Kendall was named First Team All-OVC, just the second player in MSU history to receive that honor. Her twin sister went on to be arguably the most decorated player in Morehead State soccer history. Rebekah Kendall holds numerous records for Morehead State and also has the OVC record for most career shots (284) and most goals in a match (4). She was the first, and currently only, women's soccer inductee into the Morehead State Athletics Hall of Fame.
Although the Greg Sheen Era at MSU was brief, it was the start of a turnaround for the soccer program that has since seen several All-OVC performers along with multiple OVC Championships and NCAA appearances.
