MOREHEAD, Ky. --- Today we remember the career of one of the most prolific athletes to ever set foot on Morehead State's campus. MSU Hall of Famer Brett Roberts was a standout on the court and on the mound during his time at MSU, earning several awards in both, basketball and baseball.
He is perhaps best remembered as being the nation's leading scorer for the 1991-92 basketball season where he averaged 28.1 points per game. For his efforts, he was named OVC Player of the Year, one of only five Morehead State players to receive the award. Roberts also holds the MSU record for most points scored in a game with 53 against Middle Tennessee State and is second all-time in points scored in a season with 815. He currently ranks in the top 10 in Morehead State history in career points, rebounds, steals, and free throws made. After his senior season, he was selected in the second round of 1992 NBA Draft by the Sacramento Kings.
He also excelled as a pitcher for MSU's baseball team, twice earning a spot on the All-OVC Second Team (1990 and 1991). In 1990, Roberts led the OVC in strikeouts per nine innings with 10.93, finishing with 68 strikeouts in 56 innings pitched. During his final season, he started 17 games for Morehead State, a school record at the time. After originally being drafted out of high school by the Cincinnati Reds, he spent three seasons as one of the Eagles' best pitchers before being picked in the fourth round of the 1991 MLB Draft by the Minnesota Twins.
Roberts spent a few years in the Twins' minor league system before returning to his hometown of South Webster, Ohio where he is currently the principal of South Webster High School.
Although it has been nearly thirty years since his playing days at Morehead State, he continues to have a connection to his time spent in the Bluegrass.
"I loved my time at Morehead State whether it was walking campus on beautiful fall days or competing on the basketball and baseball teams," said Roberts. "Some of my fondest memories are the times I shared with teammates and friends. I am still lucky enough to have those relationships today as I continue to stay in touch with many of them. I hope all of the current MSU students enjoy their time there as much as I did."
