MOREHEAD, Ky. – On this date 15 years ago, Morehead State football pulled off a miraculous comeback on a Saturday afternoon in Altoona, Pa.
The Eagles were beginning their 2005 season on the road in a matchup against St. Francis where they quickly fell behind the Red Flash and never led the game until the final minutes. At the 3:47 mark in the first half, St. Francis had a strong 19-0 lead, but Morehead State scored a late touchdown to make the score 19-7 at halftime.
The second half was a completely different ball game as MSU outscored its opponent 19-6, including 13 unanswered points in the final quarter. The contest took a major swing in the Eagles' direction when a muffed punt by the Red Flash was recovered by Morehead State's Michael
Lemes early in the fourth quarter. A rushing touchdown by Eli
Parkes shortly after cut the margin to 25-20 and the Eagles secured their first and only lead of the game on a touchdown in the final minutes to account for the 26-25 victory.
Morehead State head coach Matt Ballard stated after the contest, "We always tell our kids to never give up. They just kept battling back."
Mental errors proved fatal for St. Francis as the team had 14 penalties for 91 yards during the contest. After the game, Red Flash head coach Dave
Opfar was quoted as saying, "We played some good football, and we played some that was not good. We just made too many mental mistakes."
As for Morehead State, the Eagles took this close victory and used it to finish with an 8-4 record to secure another PFL South Division title. Several Eagles received postseason honors including multiple All-American team nominations for defensive back
Kwesi Williams and punt return specialist Nick Feldman. Sophomore quarterback Brian Yost also received high praise when he was named PFL South Division Offensive Player of the Year.
Ballard was named PFL South Division Coach of the Year for the fourth consecutive season and eventually finished his career as the
winningest football coach in Morehead State history.
