The following is a statement released by the Ohio Valley Conference today. Morehead State is an original member of the league that formed in 1948.
Eastern Kentucky University informed the Ohio Valley Conference in writing, and Jacksonville State University has verbally informed the league of their intention to leave the Ohio Valley Conference. By its very nature, conference membership is dynamic as institutional priorities and areas of focus change. The OVC and Morehead State University respect that evolution and value the fact both institutions will always be a valued part of the conference's illustrious past. Morehead State wishes them well and their plans to follow the OVC rules to ensure a smooth transition process.
Over its 73-year history, the OVC has had an outstanding record of membership stability, which provides a solid foundation upon which to embrace the future. As the nation's eighth-oldest Division I conference, the league takes pride in the deep history, the respectful but spirited regional rivalries, the elite athletes and coaches who have called the OVC home, the collegial and cooperative relationships between our Athletic Directors and our Presidents, and the collective commitment to remaining true to values and mission.
It is now time for the OVC to look forward. As the league evaluates expansion opportunities, the 10 outstanding members, including Morehead State, remain committed to one another and to the student-athletes they serve. The OVC is a strong conference that will continue to grow and thrive in the years ahead.
