Volleyball Drops Extremely Close Contest at Southeast Missouri

BOX SCORE

MOREHEAD, Ky. --
No more than five points separated the top two volleyball teams in the Ohio Valley Conference all night, but in the end the Morehead State team came up on the short end of a 3-0 decision at Southeast Missouri Friday night.

The setback halted MSU's 14-match winning streak, setting the Eagles' record at 18-10 and 14-3 in the league. Saturday's 3 p.m. ET match will ultimately decide the OVC's top seed and host for the tournament next week. Whichever team wins will earn that right. MSU has already secured at least a share of the regular-season title, its 13th in program history.

Morehead State held a 22-17 lead in the opening set, but the Redhawks fought off the threat and ended on an 8-0 run to win 25-22. SEMO led 9-5 in set two and later the teams tied 23-all, but the final two were scored by the home squad to win 25-23. The third frame was much the same with eight tie situations, but SEMO scored the final two again to win 25-23.

The Eagles were led by grad student Olivia Lohmeier with 16 kills. She also managed to hit .324. Abby Hulsman landed 10 kills, while McKenzee Wagener hit .524 with 11 kills.

SEMO took away one of Morehead State's strengths, however, as the Eagles only had two blocks. Wagener was limited to no blocks for the first time in the last 15 outings.

MSU did win the dig battle, 51-47. Junior libero Allison Whitten was the lone double-figure dig total with 17.

SEMO was nearly flawless on attacks as the home team only made nine errors on 114 attempts, hitting .316. Morehead State entered as the league' s top team in opponent hitting percentage.
