MOREHEAD, Ky. -- No one can ever accuse Morehead State volleyball of quitting. Down 2-0 in the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament championship match, the Eagles silenced the home crowd at Southeast Missouri as they fought back to send the match to a deciding set. But, just when it appeared like the Eagles had forced a tie set at 14-all in the finale, a call was reversed and the Eagles dropped a 15-13 set and the match 3-2 to the Redhawks.
Morehead State finished its 2021 campaign with the 32nd 20-win record in program history at 20-12.
Similar to a match against SEMO just a week prior, the Eagles lost close sets in the first two, 25-22 and 25-23. But, regrouping for the next two, MSU battled to a 25-19 and 25-15 win. But, MSU could not find the winning momentum in the fifth. MSU never had a lead but did tie the match 9-9. But SEMO scored the next three to make it 12-9. Consecutive kills by grad student
Olivia Lohmeier brought MSU to within 12-11 and 14-13 before the deciding point.
Lohmeier, who will go down as one of the most decorated players in OVC history, led the Eagles with 18 kills and finished her career with 1,989 kills, which is third place in OVC history.
Freshman
Maycie Welborn had 15 kills for the second consecutive match and added five blocks as she was named to the All-Tournament Team. Meanwhile, junior libero
Allison Whitten had another incredible performance with 40 digs as she was named All-Tournament as well. Whitten wrapped up the year with 576 digs, the seventh best single-season total in program history.
Freshman
Irene Wogenstahl tallied a career-best eight blocks to go along with eight kills, and sophomore
Abby Hulsman landed 13 kills while hitting .306. Morehead State managed 13 blocks against the Redhawks.
MSU held SEMO to just .139 hitting percentage.
