MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Morehead State's
Johni Broome has earned a spot on the preseason Watch List for the Lou Henson Award, awarded annually to the nation's top mid-major player. CollegeInsider.com administers the accolade.
Broome, a Plant City, Fla., native who was on CollegeInsider's Freshman All-America Team in 2020-21, had a breakout first collegiate campaign and has garnered a lot of attention prior to the 2021-22 season. He was also named the Lou Henson Award Player of the Week once last year.
The OVC Freshman of the Year was a nine-time Freshman of the Week and led Morehead State with 13.8 points per game while also setting the program rookie record for rebounds with 271. He was the OVC Tournament MVP in helping the Eagles capture the coveted trophy and automatic NCAA Tournament berth.
Boome also led the OVC in blocked shots and posted 13 double-doubles to rank 11th nationally.
Broome and the Eagles defeated Kentucky State in their exhibition game and now turn their attention toward the season opener at No. 22 Auburn Nov. 9.
