Football Opens 2021 Season With Setback at No. 4 James Madison

FINAL STATS
HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Facing a tall task in its 2021 season opener, Morehead State football fell 52-0 at No. 4 James Madison Saturday afternoon at Bridgeforth Stadium.
Despite the setback, the Eagles did hold JMU to just seven points in the second quarter and only three in final period.
A stout JMU defensive effort held the Eagles to negative-6 yards rushing, thanks to 12 tackles for loss. The Dukes' rushing game also produced 369 ground yards.
JMU held a 21-0 lead after one quarter thanks to six and eight-yard rushing scores and a 68 yard scoring scamper. The Dukes' only passing touchdown of the day came on a 52-yard strike in the second quarter.
KEY STATS
- Senior quarterback
DeAndre Clayton led the passing game with 71 yards on a 7-for-9 effort. Freshman QB
Grady Cramer, who was forced into duty on defense in 2019, saw his first action at signal caller in the fourth quarter.
- Morehead State was held to 98 total yards, while JMU totaled 556.
- Senior linebacker
Vincent Winey picked up where he left off in 2019. He led the defense with nine tackles, including seven solo, after having 12 in his final game last year.
- Junior defensive back
Isaiah Tigler, who missed most of 2019 with an injury, came up with eight tackles.
- Transfer
Jahleel Holmes, a linebacker, had one of the Eagles' tackles for loss, a sack of 11 yards.
- Sophomore
Hunter Richardson, converted to defense, produced a fumble recovery.
- Junior tight end
Jacob Peters led the passing game with three catches for 21 yards, including a 19-yarder in the second period.
- Senior running back
Issiah Aguero totaled 72 all-purpose yards.

The Eagles are off for three weeks until Pioneer League games start. The first league contest is March 13 at Presbyterian.
