Softball Spoils First Division I Game for Bellarmine with 10-4 Victory

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – After a slow start to begin today's game, Morehead State softball rebounded in a major way, scoring 10 unanswered runs to seal a victory against in-state rival Bellarmine. With only one extra-base hit, the Eagles (3-2) used excellent base running as a means of driving in runs stealing a season-high six bases.

Freshman Lennon Spicer had her best outing to date, throwing 6.1 innings of relief while striking out seven Bellarmine batters and allowing only two hits. Trinity Spear, Kirya Kingery, and Alexis Strother led the way offensively, driving in eight of the team's 10 runs from the first three spots in the lineup.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Three errors by the Eagles and an RBI double led to four early runs by the Knights as Bellarmine took a big lead in the bottom of the first.
  • Morehead State quickly answered back after an RBI single by Maddie Kawall and three straight bases-loaded walks tied the contest at 4 in the top of the second.
  • The Eagles continued the scoring in the top of the third with back-to-back two-RBI singles by Trinity Spear and Kirya Kingery followed by an RBI single from Alexis Strother to push the MSU lead to 9-4.
  • Lennon Spicer drove in another for Morehead State on a sac fly that earned the 10th and final run of the day for the Eagles.
NOTABLE
  • MSU tied its program record of 11 walks in Friday's contest. The Eagles previously set the mark on Feb. 15, 2020, against North Carolina A&T.
  • All 10 of Morehead State's runs were scored with two outs.
  • Kingery tied her career-high in stolen bases for the second straight weekend, swiping three bags on the day.
  • Seven strikeouts for freshman Lennon Spicer marks a career-high in her young season. She had previously earned a combined five strikeouts in her first two college appearances.
