Broome Named Finalist for Kyle Macy National Freshman of the Year
MOREHEAD, Ky. – Morehead State's Johni Broome has been named a finalist for the Kyle Macy National Freshman of the Year Award by CollegeInsider.com. On top of this honor, he was named to the site's Freshmen All-America team, earning yet another honor to what has been a historic first season for the Plant City, Fla native.

The Kyle Macy Award, which is presented annually to the top freshman in Division I college basketball, is named for a guard who starred as a freshman for Purdue.

The 1975 Indiana "Mr. Basketball" played his freshman season at Purdue University, averaging 13.8 points per game while leading the Boilermakers in free throws (85.9 percent for the season). He started in 25 of 27 games, helping them to a 16-11 season record.

After playing his freshman year at Purdue, Macy transferred to the University of Kentucky in 1976. He started every game for the Wildcats in 1977. A three-time All-America and three-time All-SEC player, Macy was a member of Kentucky's 1978 National Championship team. In his senior year of 1979-80, he became the first Kentucky player ever to be named consensus Southeastern Conference Player of the Year.

Macy was also the head coach for Morehead State from 1997-2006, accumulating 105 wins in nine seasons.

Broome most recently helped guide MSU to its first Ohio Valley Conference championship since the 2010-11 season along with being named OVC Tournament MVP.

He was also the first Eagle to be crowned OVC Freshman of the Year since Ricky Minard in 2001 after averaging 13.9 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks on the season. Broome was named First Team All-OVC and to the OVC All-Newcomer and All-Tournament teams.

The 6'10 forward has been awarded by College Insider before, having been named both, the Lou Henson & Lute Olsen National Player of the Week. Broome also owns MSU's freshman rebounds (262) and blocks (53) record as well as the mark for most individual OVC awards in a season.
