Soccer Falls in Tough Battle Against Eastern Kentucky

RICHMOND, Ky. – In what is likely to be the final conference game between the long-time rivals, Morehead was defeated by Eastern Kentucky, 2-0, at EKU Soccer Field. The loss pushes MSU to 0-4 on the season while the Colonels are now 1-2 to start the year.
 
Nine Eagles registered a shot in today's match, marking a season-high for Morehead State. MSU was led by Katie Quinn as the redshirt senior recorded a career-high five shots including two on goal.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Morehead State looked to be the aggressor early, earning four shots in the first 20 minutes but couldn't to capitalize on their opportunities.
  • A free kick by Eastern Kentucky's Michaela Iacono made it past the outstretched arms of MSU goalkeeper Grace Gaffney to give the Colonels a 1-0 lead in the 37th minute.
  • EKU pushed the margin to 2-0 in the 76th minute after Audrey Anderson set up an easy goal for Taran McMillan.
  • The Eagles' attempts to close the gap were unsuccessful as late shots from Sidney Palla, Kate Larbes and, Lauryn Kunz were all either blocked or saved by EKU as the Colonels were able to secure their first win of the year.
 
NOTABLE
  • Morehead State recorded a season-high 15 shots in the match including 10 in the second half, also a season-high for most shots in a period.
  • In her first match in goal, sophomore Grace Gaffney matched an MSU season-high six saves.
  • After today's match, senior Katie Kiolbassa is now the only member of the roster to have played every minute of action this season.
  • Freshman Anna Lohrer earned her first career start, providing valuable minutes on the defensive side of the pitch.
 
UP NEXT
MSU will be back in Jayne Stadium on Tuesday at 3 pm ET as it gets set to host UT Martin. The Eagles will be looking for their first win of the season.
