CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Morehead State Softball showcased its offensive firepower as five runs crossed the plate in Monday's series finale against Austin Peay. However, the Eagles were unable to fight off the rival Governors as they eventually fell 7-5 at Cathi Maynard Park.
The series sweep continues to keep MSU away from its first OVC win of the season with the next opportunity due up on Saturday, March 20th against Tennessee Tech. Despite the loss, the Eagles out-hit their opponent eight to seven in the ballgame.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Morehead State was able to strike first as freshman Erin Boyle drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home a runner in the top of the first.
- Austin Peay answered back in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at one with a two-out RBI single.
- Another two-out RBI single gave the Governors the lead before a three-run home run blew the game open as the home team took a 5-1 margin after the second.
- APSU continued its offensive attack with a bases-load two-RBI single in the bottom of the third.
- The Eagles started their comeback attempt in the top of the fifth as Taylor Rhea doubled to drive in a run before Peyton Slater and Erin Boyle each hit RBI singles to make it a 7-4 game.
- Lennon Spicer's sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh made it a two-run game but MSU's comeback fell short as Austin Peay completed the sweep with a 7-5 victory.
NOTABLE
- Morehead State batters combined for eight hits in the ballgame, the most for the Eagles in this weekend's series against Austin Peay.
- Erin Boyle had the best game of her college career, going 2-for-2 with two walks and two RBI/
- Kelsey Perkins didn't allow a hit or run in her 3.0 innings of relief.
- MSU earned a season-high three doubles for the second straight day as Kirya Kingery, Taylor Rhea, and Erin Boyle each hit a two-bagger.
