Football On the Road Again, Taking on Davidson Saturday

MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Following a triumphant home opener for the spring 2021 season, Morehead State football is back on the road this week. The Eagles will face the Davidson Wildcats in North Carolina. Saturday's kickoff has been moved up to Noon ET.

Morehead State (1-2/1-1 PFL) picked up a 31-14 win over Stetson at Jayne Stadium last Saturday, while the Wildcats (2-1/2-0 PFL) had a win over Presbyterian at home last weekend.

NOTABLE
• Morehead State looks to go to 2-0 in PFL play when it returns to Richardson Stadium at Davidson. Morehead State has won the last three meetings these two teams have played at Davidson and is 5-4 all-time at Richardson Stadium.

• Morehead State's defense enters this week leading the Pioneer League and ranking tied for 13th among FCS schools in interceptions. The Eagle defenders have picked off five passes, all in the last two games. Cornerback Brandon Barbee has two of those INTs.

• Since taking over the Eagle program in 2013, head coach Rob Tenyer has only lost to Davidson once, that being in 2019. Before that, MSU had reeled off seven straight wins over the Wildcats.

• Senior receiver BJ Byrd, a transfer after Jacksonville dropped its program after the 2019 season, ranks fourth in the PFL in receptions per game (4.7) and yards per game (70.7). He is also tied for second in the conference with 18 points scored. Byrd has hauled in three touchdowns in the past two games, including two short ones versus Stetson.

• Junior wideout Thomas Campbell-Clay, senior kicker/punter Andrew Foster and senior running back Issiah Aguero were all high school teammates at Hardin Valley Academy in Tennessee. Campbell-Clay put up his best career game Saturday versus Stetson with six catches for 96 yards and a touchdown.

• Senior defensive end Vaughn Taylor, Jr., once again is the Eagles' leader in tackling opponents in the backfield. Taylor, Jr., has 3.5 TFLs this season, including two against Stetson. He has at least one TFL in six consecutive games he's played (missing the JMU game) and has one in 12 of his last 14 games since 2019. Overall, Taylor, Jr., has 30.5 career tackles behind the lines of scrimmage.

• Junior QB Mark Pappas tossed three touchdowns against Stetson and now has five career games with three or more TD passes since 2018. Four of those five instances have occured in home games. Pappas now has 2,447 career passing yards, needing just 53 more to eclipse the 2,500-mark.

• Morehead State's offense is 6-of-8 in the red zone in the past two games after not reaching inside the opponent 20-yard line at James Madison.

• Senior linebacker Vincent Winey has been nearly everywhere in the Eagles' first three games. He has increased his tackle total each game, culminating in a career-high 15 stops versus Stetson. He also had 10 at Presbyterian, including 2.5 in the backfield and a forced fumble. He ranks second in the PFL in total tackles with 34.

Vaughn Taylor, Jr., and Andrew Foster were named to the spring 2021 PFL Players to Watch List.

• Junior defensive lineman Devon Connors ranks second in the PFL with his three tackles for loss.

• Nine different receivers caught passes at James Madison and eight did at Presbyterian and versus Stetson. Morehead State now has a streak of 20 consecutive games with at least six different receivers catching at least one pass. That streak dates to Oct. 20, 2018 vs. Valparaiso.

• Among a number of changes and additions to the coaching staff, third-year assistant Andrew Strobel was elevated to defensive coordinator. Strobel coached the linebackers and special teams previously. Kylan Butler was promoted to Associate Head Coach. There are eight new coaches on the 2020-21 staff.
