Physical Play Sees Morehead State Soccer Fall 3-1 to Jacksonville State

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – The ball didn't bounce in Morehead State Soccer's favor in its match against Jacksonville State as the Eagles fell 3-1 in Jacksonville, Ala. MSU was unable to recover from a red card call that saw the Eagles at an 11-10 disadvantage for a majority of the final 45 minutes.

One positive note from today's match was that MSU's six shots on goal tied a season-high for the Eagles. They had previously set the mark on March 9th against Tennessee Tech. Despite today's chippy play between the teams, Morehead State committed a season-low seven fouls in the match.

Nicole Fiantaco led the Eagles with her season-high of two shots, one on goal. Grace Gaffney recorded five saves in her second start of the season in the net for MSU.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Junior defender Nicole Palmer netted her first goal of the year in the 19th minute of play to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
  • Jacksonville State answered back shortly after as Ida Cedarburg scored in the 26th minute to tie the match.
  • Senior midfielder Katie Kiolbassa was assessed a red card in the 48th minute to put MSU down a player for a significant portion of the final 45 minutes.
  • JSU capitalized on its numbers advantage with a goal in the 63rd minute by Ali Thomas to put the Gamecocks up 2-1.
  • The last goal of the match came quickly after as Cynthia Bagozzi put one past goalkeeper Grace Gaffney in the 66th minute to account for the 3-1 final score.

NOTABLE
  • Nicole Palmer's goal represented the first score of the season by MSU that came in the first half of a match.
  • The score by Palmer was also her first since putting one in the net in a 2-1 loss to UT Martin on October 11, 2019.
  • On top of the red card, Katie Kiolbassa was subbed out for the first time this season in the 31st minute. She had previously played in all 586 minutes of action for Morehead State before the substitution.
  • Katie Quinn received her second yellow card of the season in the 76th minute of the match. It was the second of three yellow cards assessed in the span of 12 minutes of play in this contest.
