MOREHEAD, Ky. – In its first conference game in nearly two years, Morehead State fell to a visiting Eastern Illinois team, 5-2. The home opener for the Eagles was the first game at University Field since March 11, 2020, when MSU hosted Dayton for what would be the final series of the season.
Today's series opener against the Panthers proved to be a pitcher's duel as both starters threw complete games. Morehead State now looks ahead to tomorrow's doubleheader in hopes of finding a coveted win over an Eastern Illinois team that has defeated the Eagles in 10 straight games dating back to 2015.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The visiting Panthers got on the board early with an RBI single to make it 1-0 after the first.
- Eastern Illinois continued its offensive prowess in the next inning when a home run drove in three.
- Another homer in the following inning, this time a solo shot, represented the fifth run for EIU.
- Morehead State put some runs up in the fourth after freshman Lennon Spicer singled up the middle to bring a pair of Eagles across the plate to account for the 5-2 final tally.
NOTABLE
- Along with leading the Eagles in hits, Lennon Spicer also struck out a career-high eight batters in her complete game in the circle.
- Senior Alexis Strother has earned a hit in all but one game this season, going 1-for-3 this afternoon.
- Sophomore Kirya Kingery crossed the plate for the ninth of the season after coming into the ballgame tied for fourth in the OVC in runs scored.
