MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Morehead State baseball is back in action this weekend, this time at home. The Eagles host the SIUE Cougars Friday and Saturday. Games are set for Friday at 1 p.m. ET with a doubleheader Saturday at Noon.
Morehead State returns to game action for the first time since March 21 after last weekend's series at UT Martin was
cancelled due to COVID-19 protocols. It'll also mark the first home games since March 13.
Games two and three on Saturday are set to be aired on ESPN+.
The Eagles are 10-10 overall and 2-1 in the OVC. The Cougars are 11-10 in their 21 games and 5-4 in OVC contests. SIUE swept eKU last weekend and had won five straight before a 7-2 setback to Bradley Tuesday.
NOTABLE
-Morehead State owns an 11-game winning streak over SIUE, and the Eagles have registered 10 or more runs in 10 straight games against the Cougars dating back to the second game of the series in 2016. Furthermore, the Eagles own nine straight wins over SIUE in games played at Allen Field and have scored double-digit runs in all nine. The Eagles have not lost a home game to SIUE since April 27, 2013 - span of more than 2,500 days.
-The Eagle pitching staff boasts two of the top four pitchers in terms of low ERA in the OVC. Senior lefty reliever
Cory Conway leads the OVC in ERA at 2.21 while grad student
Jason Goe comes in at No. 4 with a 2.67 ERA.
-Morehead State pitchers rank second in the OVC in strikeouts per nine innings. The Eagle mound men average 9.33 whiffs per nine frames.Â
-Junior relief pitcher
John Bakke leads the OVC and ranks tied for third in the nation in appearances with 12. Coming into the 2021 season, Bakke had 15 total appearances in his first two seasons after redshirting in 2018 and has nearly equaled that in the first 20 games in 2021.
-Speaking of appearances, Conway made his 68th career appearance on March 20 at Norfolk State. He is now tied with Quintin Morgan (2007-10) for career appearances. Sixty-four (64) of his times on the mound have been in relief, ranking him third all-time in program in relief appearances. One more would tie for second with former closer (and occasional starter)
Craig Pearcy (2012-16).
-Freshman first baseman
Jackson Feltner leads the Eagle offense. The Louisa, Ky., product is hitting .345 in 17 games. He has hits in 11 games, and six of those contests have seen him record a multi-hit game. He is the only true freshman in the league to rank in the top 10 in batting average.
-
Jackson Feltner also leads the Eagles in reaching base. Entering the SIUE series, Feltner carries a 10-game reached-base streak to his credit.
-Junior infielder
Bryce Hensor has been the mainstay at the top of the batting order. He has batted in the leadoff spot in all 20 games. But that is the only spot in the order where the same player has occupied a spot in all games. The seventh spot has seen the highest shifting where nine different players have been in the spot. Freshman outfielder
Jacob Ferry has been in that seventh spot the most with six games.Â
-In 19 games, senior catcher
Jack Gardner has committed only one error for a team-best .994 fielding percentage. At the plate, he also leads the Eagles in times not allowing the opposing defense a chance to make an error. He has hit four balls out of the yard.
