JACKSONVILLE, Ala. -- Led by home runs from freshmen
Jacob Ferry and
Jackson Feltner, a timely two-run double by senior
Jack Gardner, and a trio of pitchers who kept the Gamecocks at bay, Morehead State baseball defeated Jacksonville State 6-3 at Rudy Abbott Field Sunday to win the Ohio Valley Conference series.
Morehead State, now 20-15 overall and 10-5 in the conference, remained in first place after seven weekends of league action and has won all five of its series two games to one.
Feltner, who now leads the Eagles with nine home runs in his first collegiate season, went deep for the third consecutive game and recorded four long balls in the weekend series. Ferry drilled his fourth long ball of the season. Eagle starter
John Sherman tossed the first five frames, only allowing one run, for his first decision of the 2021 campaign.
HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
- Feltner crushed his home run to right field (after hitting three to left in the series) to open the scoring in the top of the second.
- Back to back run-producing doubles by seniors
Stephen Hill and Gardner (his a two-run two-bagger) staked the Eagles to a 4-0 cushion after three.
- Ferry took a ball deep off JDU reliever Isaiah Magwood in the fourth to make it 5-0.
- Isaac Crowe put the Gamecocks finally on the board in the bottom of the fourth with a solo homer.
- Senior right-fielder
Ryan Layne singled home Gardner in the seventh as it sat at 6-1.
- Derrick Williams launched a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth, but closer
John Bakke coaxed two ground outs to the left side of the infield to end the victory.
NOTABLE
- In limited at-bats (8), Ferry hit .500 for the series.
- In the three games, Feltner crushed four home runs, scored five times and possessed a 1.455 slugging percentage.
- Feltner now has a 16-game hitting streak and a 25-game reached-base streak.
- Senior second baseman
Bryce Hensor had two more hits today and two in each game at JSU to hit .462 on the weekend. Hensor's hitting streak is now 10 games with a reached-base streak string of 15 games.
- Senior lefty
Cory Conway tossed the sixth and seventh innings, surrendering just one hit. His 71 career relief appearances now ranks second in program history.
- With two RBI on the day, Gardner now leads the team with 36 RBI on the year and 10 multi-RBI games.
UP NEXT
Morehead State hosts Murray State next weekend for four games, three of which count in the OVC race. A doubleheader is slated for Friday at 1 p.m. ET. MUrray State is second in the league after this weekend at 11-7.
