MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Morehead State football has landed 15 players on the Spring 2021 All-Pioneer League Teams as the league announced its major winners and all-conference lists this week.
Morehead State honorees are highlighted by six first-team selections. Senior wide receiver
BJ Byrd and senior defensive lineman
Vaughn Taylor, Jr. were named unanimous First-Team All-PFL. Both were named All-PFL selections with their respective teams in 2019.
The other four to join Byrd and Taylor, Jr. were senior linebacker
Vincent Winey, along with redshirt junior quarterback
Mark Pappas, junior offensive linemen
Cam Marriott, and junior defensive back
Brandon Barbee. Byrd also made the All-PFL second-team as an all-purpose player.
Junior wide receiver
Thomas Campbell-Clay, along with senior punter
Andrew Foster, joined Byrd on the second team. Honorable Mention accolades went to senior linebacker Cam Barrett, senior defensive back
Tyler Noble, redshirt junior defensive linemen
Devon Connors, redshirt junior offensive linemen
Michael Davis, junior offensive linemen
Jacob Ungruhe, junior return specialist
Ian Holder, and sophomore defensive linemen
Nick Lavender.
Byrd, a Jacksonville University transfer, finished as the PFL leader in receiving touchdowns with eight, scoring with 54 points accounted for, kick return touchdowns with one, and total touchdowns with nine leading to his unanimous selection. The senior wide receiver also made the All-PFL second-team as an all-purpose player. The Richmond, Calif., native racked up 734 all-purpose yards on the season. Byrd was also named the PFL Co-Special Teams Player of the Week after his performance against Butler at home.
Taylor, Jr., finished the shortened season with 32 total tackles with 14 of them being solo and seven for loss. The Washington, D.C., native led the team in sacks with 3.5. He also totaled four quarterback hurries and two pass break-ups leading him to his unanimous and second First-Team All-PFL selection.
Pappas, from Avon Lake, Ohio, led the PFL in five statistical categories including passing efficiency (134.6), passing touchdowns (14), and passing yards (1,568). The redshirt junior completed 62% of his passes and recorded 17 total touchdowns. He also had five games where he accounted for at least three total touchdowns.
Winey, a native of Lindenhurst, N.Y., led Morehead State with 84 total tackles with 41 of them being solo and seven for loss. He ranked second in the league in total tackles. The senior also forced and recovered a fumble. Winey was named PFL Defensive Player of the Week after his program single-game record performance, 23 total tackles, against Butler at home.
Barbee, from Orlando, Fla., led the PFL in interceptions with five. He also recorded 24 total tackles with 18 of them being solo. The junior ball hawk also broke up two pass and forced a fumble on defense. Barbee was tabbed PFL Co-Defensive Player of the Week after his performance against Valparaiso where he intercepted a pair of passes, returned one for a touchdown, and finished the game with three tackles (two solo).
Marriott, from Redlands, Calif., blocked for a unit that generated 335 yards on offense per game in PFL contests. The junior started all seven games this season.
Campbell-Clay and Foster, both from Knoxville, Tenn., made the All-PFL Second-Team at their respective positions. Campbell-Clay, a junior wide receiver, was second on the team with 28 catches, 403 receiving yards, and four touchdowns. Foster, a senior punter, logged 36 punts and averaged 41.4 yards per punt. he averaged 40 or more yards on punts for the third consecutive season.
Davis and Ungruhe, both offensive linemen, were the offensive players named to the honorable mention PFL list, while Barrett, Noble, Connors, and Lavender were the defensive players. Holder, a 2019 First-Team All-PFL return specialist selection, made it for special teams.
