Soccer Season Ends With Loss to Belmont

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The 2020 Morehead State Soccer season came to a close on Tuesday as the Eagles fell 2-0 to Belmont at E.S. Rose Park. Morehead State ends its season with a final record of 2-8 while the Bruins finish at 5-4-1 on the year.

The Eagles had double-digit shots for the third straight match but were unsuccessful in getting any of those shots into the net as they failed to score for the sixth time this season. Out of the 10 total shots tonight, only four were on goal, the lowest for MSU since its four SOG performance against SIUE on March 19.

With the season coming to end, Morehead State Soccer will officially say goodbye to seniors Lauryn Kunz, Katie Quinn, Ashley Ritchie, and Tia Williams. Kunz and Quinn were two of five Eagles to play all 90 minutes tonight, while Williams and Ritchie played 46 and 12 minutes, respectively.

"It was a tough year," said head coach Warren Lipka. "We played well enough to end higher in the table, but the name of the game is scoring. We will develop this part of our game. We have come a long way since 2019, the record might not show it, but the play does."

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The play was noticeably physical between the two teams as several fouls were called within the first 25 minutes capped off by a yellow card addressed to Lauryn Kunz in the 24th minute.
- Belmont was able to get on the board shortly after as Avery Nowak put one in the back of the net on an assist by Julie Garst in the 29th minute.
- The two clubs played it even for about 50 minutes before Julie Garst got a goal of her own in the 77th minute with an assist accredited to Anna Sweeney.
- Morehead State was unable to register any more goals in the remaining time as it saw its season come to a close.

NOTABLE
- Colleen Swift concludes the 2020 season as the Eagles' leading shot taker with 15 shots on the year. Her two attempts tonight marked the seventh time this season that she registered that amount.
- After finishing her season with a 1.15 GAA, Michelle Jerantowski holds the title for the third-best GAA in Morehead State Soccer program history.
- Junior defender Nicole Palmer led the Eagles this year with 856 minutes played on the pitch. She had one goal this season on 10 total shots (six on goal).
