Softball Takes Both Halves of Doubleheader at Dayton

DAYTON, Ohio – Morehead State Softball swept both halves of today's doubleheader against Dayton with a 4-3 extra-inning victory in game one before holding on to secure a 7-6 win in game two. The two victories mark the first time that MSU has won both games of a doubleheader against a Division I opponent since April 29, 2018, against Tennessee Tech.

The Eagles came out on fire offensively, combining for 11 runs on 17 hits on the day. Morehead State was led by a 3-for-5 performance by Alexis Strother. The senior tallied a combined six RBI in the two games while hitting her second home run of the year in game two. Freshman Peyton Jordan came out of a recent hitting slump in a big way today as she combined to go 4-for-8 while adding an RBI.

Freshman Lennon Spicer pitched 12.0 combined innings this afternoon as she picked up the win in both contests while throwing six strikeouts. Spicer has thrown 98.2 innings in 19 appearances this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME ONE
- Morehead State got on the board early as Peyton Slater secured an RBI for the fifth time in six games with a single to center that brought Kirya Kingery home in the first.
- Dayton answered back in the bottom half of the inning on a two-RBI double down the left field line to give the Flyers the lead.
- A single and an MSU throwing error allowed another run to cross the plate for Dayton in the bottom of the fourth as the Flyers extended their lead to 3-1.
- Alexis Strother tied the game for the Eagles in the top of the fifth on a bases-loaded double to deep center that drove in two.
- Jen Clausen's pinch-hit RBI double in the top of the eighth gave Morehead State a 4-3 lead late before Lennon Spicer shut the door on the Flyers to pick up her sixth win of the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME TWO
- Alexis Strother blasted a three-run homer in the top of the third that brought Kirya Kingery and Peyton Rose in to score.
- The Eagles exploded for four runs in the top of the fourth led by a two-RBI double from Peyton Rose to extend the MSU lead to 7-0.
- Dayton slowly started to inch its way back into the ball game as it combined for three RBI off two home runs in the bottom of the fourth.
- The long ball struck once again for the Flyers as a two-RBI homer followed by an RBI single cut the Eagles' lead to just one.
- Dayton was able to load the bases in the bottom of the seventh but Lennon Spicer once again spoiled any potential comeback as Morehead State took game two, 7-6.

NOTABLE
- Alexis Strother tied her career-high with four RBI in game two. She most recently reached that total against Bellarmine on February 27.
- Peyton Rose played a signifcant role in the Eagles' game-two victory, going 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.
- Morehead State's nine hits in game two were the most since combining for 11 base knocks against Kentucky State on March 17.
- MSU's .333 team batting average in the second game was the highest against a Division I opponent since hitting .355 against Eastern Illinois on March 7.
