Senior Day Spoiled as Softball Succumbs to SIUE in Extra-Innings

MOREHEAD, Ky. – This afternoon's Senior Day celebration ended on a sour note for Morehead State softball as the Eagles dropped their series finale with SIUE, 4-3. MSU was a strike away from putting away the Cougars but late-game heroics by the opposition would eventually give SIUE the victory in eight innings.

Alexis Strother led the Eagles at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance that featured her third home run of the season. The Lebanon, Ohio native notched two RBI on the day with one run and one walk.

Kelsey Perkins started in the circle for Morehead State where she scattered two runs on five hits in 5.0 innings. In relief, Lennon Spicer threw 3.0 innings with two runs allowed on three hits while striking out two Cougar batters.

Before the contest, the softball program honored the careers of returning 2020 graduates Randi Hamilton and Lindsay Anderson along with outfielder Maddie Kawall, who will be earning her degree at the end of this semester. The Morehead State coaching staff also recognized a quintet of SIUE seniors.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Eagles started Senior Day off with a bang as Alexis Strother hit a no-doubt two-run homer in the bottom of the first.
- SIUE cut into the MSU lead in the third on a sacrifice fly to right that featured a nice sliding grab in foul territory by Madeline Gailor
- Morehead State plated another in the fourth as a routine pop fly off the bat of Peyton Rose was dropped by SIUE to score Kelsey Sparks as the Eagles took a 3-1 lead.
- The Cougars hit a long ball of their own in the fifth to trim the margin to one once again.
- MSU was a strike away from victory before a single through the right side by SIUE tied the game in the seventh.
- After a lead-off double in the eighth, the Cougars took the extra-inning lead off a single to center that marked the final run of a 4-3 SIUE win.

NOTABLE
- Alexis Strother's home run in the first inning was the ninth homer of her MSU career.
- Maddie Kawall went 0-for-2 with an HBP in her Senior Day afternoon.
- Peyton Slater hit a double in her third straight game with a two-bagger in the eighth. She has now reached base safely in eight straight contests while extending her hitting streak to four games.
- Today's matchup marked the third extra-inning game for the Eagles this season. This was the first loss for MSU in extras after previously going 2-0 in such games this year.
