Volleyball Absorbs Setback to Marshall in Marathon Five-Setter

BOX SCORE

MOREHEAD, Ky. --
Morehead State volleyball was in a good position Thursday night against Marshall, leading 2-1, but the visiting 'Herd turned up the pressure and the offense in the final two sets as the Eagles absorbed a 3-2 setback in the opening match of the Comfort Inn-Vitational.

After falling 25-23 in the opener, MSU cruised to 25-16 and 25-22 wins to take the 2-1 lead. But Marshall proceeded to then land 22 kills with just three errors, including no errors in the deciding set, to win 25-17 and 15-5. The Eagles slipped to 3-6 on the young season.

Freshman middle Irene Wogenstahl had her best career match with 14 kills on a .324 attack efficiency. She nailed in 13 kills before committing a late error while also adding a team-high three blocks.

MSU's outside hitter tandem of graduate student Olivia Lohmeier and sophomore Abby Hulsman combined for 38 of their team's 66 kills. Lohmeier had 22 spikes, while Hulsman landed 16. But the Marshall net defense also forced 26 errors from the duo.

Marshall entered the match leading Division I in blocks and proved steady in that category with 11 team rejections. The 'Herd also hit .252 on the night with Ciara DeBell smacking in a team-best 19 kills.

Morehead State's back row defense was nearly as stout where junior libero Allison Whitten came up with 27 digs, her third 20+ dig match in nine tries this year. Junior Olivia Montelisciani scooped 15 Marshall attempts.

Freshman setter Brenna Bommer made her second career start and re-established her career highs with 58 assists and nine digs while also adding three kills and a block assist.

The Eagles continue the season and the tournament Friday versus Toledo at 6 p.m. ET. Marshall will face No. 4 Pitt at 2 p.m. in Johnson Arena.
