MOREHEAD, Ky. – The Morehead State Eagles could not overcome an early goal from Central Michigan, as the Eagles fell to the Chippewas Friday night, 1-0.
The Eagles were forced to withstand a constant attack from Central Michigan, who peppered Morehead State with 12 shots throughout the game, but held strong on the back of goalie play from both junior
Michelle Jerantowski and the first appearance of the year from sophomore
Grace Gaffney, who came in relief of Jerantowski in the 2nd half and didn't allow a goal.
Head coach
Warren Lipka was proud of his team's resilience throughout the night. "Ladies played great defense tonight. Central is a quality team with very good team speed. We made an early mistake and it cost us. But make no mistake they recovered and played well," he said.
The lone tally of the night came from the Chippewas at the start of the fifth minute off the foot of Gaelle Wells, but Jerantowski was able to limit the damage in a critical moment only a few minutes later. Facing her first penalty shot of the year, Jerantowski made a diving stop to keep the deficit at one.
The relentless offensive pressure from the Chippewas prevented the Eagles, who came into the matchup averaging 9.8 shots per game, from mounting a sustained attack throughout the night, only managing five shots in the match. Despite this, they did get opportunities from
Christa Palla in the 11th minute, Abby Vanhoeve in the 62nd minute and
Nicole Fiantaco in the 86th minute, but none could find the back of the net to equalize.
The Eagles return to action against another new opponent, Eastern Michigan, in Ypsilanti, Michigan on Sunday at 1:00 pm ET.Â
