LITTLE ROCK, Ark. --Despite a career-high performance from sophomore right-side hitter Maycie Welborn, the Morehead State volleyball team lost to the Little Rock Trojans 3-2 (20-25, 25-15, 22-25, 25-15, 10-15) Friday on the road at the Jack Stephens Center.
The loss dropped Morehead State's record to 8-11 overall and 4-4 in OVC play. Welborn landed a career-high 21 kills in the match.
It was the first-ever match between the schools in volleyball as Little Rock is in its first year in the OVC.
Game Notes
» Morehead State had three players in double figures in kills, led by Welborn. Sydney Wyman and Abby Hulsman had 10 kills each.
» Morehead State had four players in double figures in digs, including a team-high 12 digs from Peighton Isley.
» Shea Hefner had a career-high four aces in the loss.
» Morehead State attackers benefited by a team-high 43 assists from Bridget Bessler, who also collected 11 digs. It was her fourth straight double-double.
» The Eagles managed a .268 attack efficiency, including getting 28 kills with just six errors through the first two sets.
» Irene Wogenstahl's team-high four blocks marked her ninth straight match with 2+ blocks.
How It Happened
SET 1 | The Eagles lost set one 25-20 despite a solid showing on the attacking side. Morehead State registered a .333 attack percentage with 14 kills in the set loss.
SET 2 | Morehead State evened the match at 1-1 with a 25-15 victory in the second set. The Eagles grabbed control of the set lead early on at 3-2 and never trailed. Morehead State led by as many as 11 points at 22-11 before finishing off the set.
SET 3 | Little Rock went ahead 2-1 in the match after defeating the Eagles in the third set. The Eagles came up short by the score of 25-22. Little Rock grabbed the advantage for good at 18-17 in a set that was tied up eight times before the Trojans took over in the second half of the stanza.
SET 4 | Morehead State then responded to secure set four 25-15 to force a fifth set. The Eagles took the lead for good at 9-8 in a set that showcased four lead changes before the Eagles took over the lead. Morehead State also supplemented their offense with four aces in the set. Morehead State got a solid defensive performance from a front row that blocked four Little Rock attacks in the stanza.
SET 5 | Morehead State was on the wrong side of a back-and-forth match, winning the second and fourth sets, but losing the first, third and fifth, which they dropped by the score of 15-10, to fall in the match. The Eagles lost the first point and never clawed back into the lead.
