Eagle Softball travels to Western Kentucky for final fall doubleheader

Morehead, Ky. – The Morehead State softball team will conclude its competitive fall season on Sunday as the Eagles travel to Western Kentucky for a pair of 7-inning games with the first beginning at 1 p.m. CT at the WKU Softball Complex in Bowling Green, Ky.

It will be the second time first-year coach Megan Griffith will get to see her squad in action. Last Sunday, MSU swept a home 5-inning doubleheader over Kentucky Christian 6-2 and 8-1.

"Our goal is to go out there and compete while implementing the concepts we've been working on throughout the fall," Griffith said.

The Eagles posted records of 8-36 overall and 7-20 in the Ohio Valley Conference last spring. That team batted .113, had a 5.49 earned-run average and a .941 fielding percentage, but the first set of scrimmages showed glimpses of being able to improve significantly on those marks.

"Practice has been great this week. We have had a heavy defensive focus this week and the players have been getting after it hard," Griffith said. "Our defensive focus going into the games is having a strong attack mentality and being clean on all routine plays. (The) pitchers are looking to attack their zones hard and keep hitters off balance."

The two teams have met eight times during the regular season, with the Hilltoppers owning a 6-2 advantage. WKU went 38-13 last spring. It will be the first two games of an eight-game fall slate for Western Kentucky. All of those contests will be played at home.

Griffith is still experimenting with her lineups. As was the case last Sunday, most of the players will see time in a variety of different positions. In addition, junior catcher Kaytlyn Cripps (Price, Utah/Colorado Mesa Univ.) will dress for the doubleheader. She was not cleared to play this past weekend.

"We're still moving players around and finding opportunities for everyone to contribute to our success," Griffith said.

In the KCU series, sophomore pitcher Madi Ogden won game one with freshman Jessie Begley earning a save. Sophomore Maya Morris collected the victory in the second contest with junior Lennon Spicer credited with the save.

The Eagles received solid performances throughout the lineup both at the plate and in the field last weekend with all 11 eligible position players contributing.

The team will continue fall practice throughout October.
